The man - whose name has not been released - walked into the building in an agitated state at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, making “irrational statements,” police said. He then took the towel out and began shouting “chemical warfare.”

The hazmat incident forced sections of the hospital to be evacuated. In total, approximately 35 people were evacuated, with three temporarily contained due to potential exposure to potential chemicals, officials said. None of the evacuated parties have shown any adverse symptoms.

It is not clear what chemicals could have been on the towel, and authorities are currently in the process of testing it to determine whether it is hazardous.

Police said that the towel-waving man was able to escape the scene and was not taken into custody.

The emergency room remained op[en during the threat and evacuation, though nearby streets around the hospital were temporarily closed. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
